Interview With Amazing Fitness Model/Competitor Jaylie Nicol
Name: Jaylie Nicoll
Height/Weight: 164cm, 125lbs
Nickname(s): Jak & Babe
Q. How long have you been training?
A. I got involved in fitness for the first time just a little over 2 years ago, but by no means did I know anything about bodybuilding/sculpting until just about over a year ago when I learnt how to gain lean muscle. For my last competition in October 2009, I only had 6 weeks to prepare and was not able to do a lot of movements (mostly upper body). Since then, I have been training very hard now that I have gotten a grasp on the concept of gaining lean muscle and I will confess that I am obsessed with it!
Q. How do you keep yourself motivated and on-track through the grueling dieting in the last few weeks?
A. I find it easier to stay on track because my diet does not change significantly. I eat very well year round and it’s a slow and steady process so I am not ‘stun gunned’ (so to speak). My motivation definitely lies within not wanting to give up on myself. In the end, I’m doing this for one person and no one else. I have the amazing help of Craig & Julie Bonnett of Contestprep.ca to coach me for my upcoming competitions with the WBFF.
Q. What is the one key piece of advice you could pass on to our readers?
A. Be consistent & hire a Personal Trainer/Coach. Things do not happen over night, no matter how frustrated you get, keep trying.
Another very important (and sometimes missing link) is a support system. The people in my life who have been there for me throughout everything mean the world to me and they never doubt how much I appreciate them. I have the most amazing family, with my mother, who I also have the privilege of having as my best friend, and step father who believe in me no matter what I do. I couldn’t leave out the man in my life without mentioning that he has been there for me the entire time and at the end of the day, even if my legs are shaking or I can’t lift my arms, he would be there to help feed me chicken or take me for a walk late at night (there was once an incident where I needed to walk off a small cheat!) if he needed to.
Q. What is your favorite energy/pre-workout supplement? Protein supplement?
A. I am so proud to be a BioX Performance Nutrition Sponsored Athlete! I LOVE their protein powders and have always used them. If you haven’t tried them yet, I suggest giving them a taste!
Q. How many days a week do you work out?
A. I train on a 5 day split, with Day 6 being a Rest day with cardio only.
Q: How many exercises per body part do you typically do in a workout?
A: When I am not training for a competition, I will train 1-2 body parts in a work out. This season, I have switched it up a bit so that I am targeting main body parts, with a few added supersets from completely different muscles groups along the way in order to keep my heart rate up and rest times down.
Q.What kind of workout program do you follow?
A. Right now, since I am 9 weeks away from a show, I have added cardio back into my training. Normally, I would keep this to 2-3x a week. Training is a lot faster paced, but I am still lifting very heavy and when I have a scheduled training time, it never gets moved!
Q. Do you believe in workout programs like Insanity or P90X?
A. I believe that they are good for overall weight loss, but you will not gain that much more muscle than you already had to start with.
Q. What do you wish you had known before you started doing shows?
A. The first thing would be to hire a good coach!! I can’t say that I wasted time, but it took me a lot longer learning everything on my own. It makes the world of difference.
Q. What is one of the biggest sacrifices you've made, and was it worth it?
A. The other day it was looking like I came out of an 80’s music video with absolutely no time to blow dry my hair out between training and work, but you have to fit in the training! More seriously, the real sacrifices I have made have all been worth it. I can’t tell you how often I get asked “..and you actually like this?” (with the most puzzled look on their face). My response back is, “no, I absolutely love this!”
Q. As a new bodybuilder/fitness/figure/bikini competitor, how should one select which organization or event to compete in? And what are the major differences between the numerous organizations out there?
A. I have made the mistake of competing within the wrong organizations and learnt a lot of hard lessons from it. It’s very important to do your research and realize who you are representing before you step on their stage. I have decided to compete with the WBFF and I am very confident in my choice!!!
Q. For someone who is currently a non-competitor, but wants to be as healthy and fit as possible, what would you recommend as far as diet ratios and workout plan (i.e. combination of weights and cardio, how many days, etc.)?
A. If you are interested in getting started on a new fitness or nutrition program, feel free to visit my website and email me! www.jaylienicollpersonaltraining.com Like I said before, coaches and trainers make all the difference!
Q.Who is your favorite bodybuilder, fitness model, and/or athlete?
A. Emily Stirling, Julie Bonnett, Jamie Eason
Q.What is your favorite healthy meal?
A. I love juicy steak, natural peanut butter, protein banana pancakes, whole wheat double chicken pitas and brown rice sushi
Q.What is your favorite cheat meal?
A. A lot more of everything above listed than I should be eating!
Q. What is your favorite exercise?
A. I love/hate shoulder presses & stiff-legged deadlifts
Q. What is that one body part that you just can’t seem to bring up or make it look like you want?
A. It used to be all of my shoulders but they are actually finally making an appearance. I would have to say my rear delts and my upper abdominals, although ironically as I am writing this, it is my upper abs that are so sore from doing plate drags with my trainer on Monday.
Q. What are your future plans?
A. September 18th 2010, WBFF World Championships!! Get your tickets now if you haven’t already got them! I could not be more excited!!
